概要
文豪Ｃ・ディケンズの名作「大いなる遺産」を名手M・ニューウェル監督のもと、Ｈ・Ｂ＝カーター、Ｒ・ファインズら英国の豪華キャスト陣を迎えて映画化。主人公ピップがたどる奇妙な運命を風格豊かに描写。 19世紀英国の地方の村。母親や兄たちを失った少年ピップは姉とその夫ジョーの家に引き取られたが、脱走した受刑者マグウイッチと遭遇する事件を経て、裕福なミス・ハヴィシャムの屋敷に招かれ、そこでエステラという美しい少女と出会って彼女に好意を抱く。成人後、鍛冶職人になったピップは謎の人物の莫大な遺産を受け取れるという申し出に付いた条件に従い、ロンドンに行って紳士になろうとするが、そこでエステラと再会する。
